· Psychosynthesis was first developed in the early 1900's by an Italian psychiatrist called Roberto Assagioli. He deliberatly moved away from the psychoanalytic models of the time that emphasised illness and pathology, while excluding the positive aspects of the human psyche.
· It is a comprehensive approach to human development that recognises the innate potential we all have for our own healing and growth.
· Psychosynthesis specialises in adapting methods to the person rather than trying to force the person to fit the method.
· It teaches us how to connect with, and use information that comes in through our bodily 'felt' sense, as well as through our thinking and feeling.
· Psychosynthesis encompasses methods that work with the subconscious and what has been repressed, as well as the transpersonal elements of the psyche.
· Clients experience an authentic relationship with the counsellor (called a Guide, in Psychosynthesis), and a feeling of having been 'met', rather than experiencing a series of 'techniques'.
